||Finding the Small Charge Explosion Center by Analyzing Occurrence of Mechanical Twins in FCC Metals

Metals exposed to explosions undergo macro-deformations and/or micro-crystal structure variations, such as slip bands or mechanical twins, depending on the charge and distance from it. Twinning or slip occurrence depends on metal stacking fault energy, blast wave pressure and deformation rate. An experimental campaign was performed on different FCC metals by submitting them to small charge explosions with varying target-to-charge distances. Observation results on exposed surfaces of austenitic stainless steels, gold alloys, copper and α-brass (30% Zn), and aluminum alloys specimens subjected to the explosion of 50 g and 100 g of plastic explosive are presented. Cross section analyses are also presented in a few cases. Optical and Electron Microscopy, Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) imaging, and X-ray diffraction allowed to establish the target-to-charge distance detectability limit, and hence the bomb unknown position in real cases, when explosion related mechanical twins are found in metal objects retrieved on the crime scene.
