Symposium Coupling Advanced Characterization and Modeling Tools for Understanding Fundamental Phase Transformation Mechanisms: An MPMD Symposium in Honor of Hamish Fraser
Presentation Title Quantitative Characterization of Microstructure in Near-alpha and Alpha+Beta Titanium Alloys
Author(s) Adam L Pilchak, Daniel Evans
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Adam L Pilchak
Abstract Scope The microstructure of near-alpha and alpha+beta titanium alloys is a complex beast spanning at least seven orders of magnitude and exhibiting a wide range of morphologies. Because these alloys contain no hard second phases or inclusions, the mechanical properties, fatigue in particular, are strongly dependent on microstructural length scale and morphology. Hence, accurately quantifying these features is essential. The Metals Branch of the US Air Force Research Laboratory manages the Metals Affordability Initiative (MAI) in which the aerospace supply chain works together in a precompetitive environment to collectively advance the state of the art in practical and pragmatic materials science. This talk will review Professor Fraser’s contribution to the early days of the MAI program and discuss its continued impact by highlighting selected ongoing work at AFRL.
