Abstract Scope Depending on the microstructural location of the carbides, bainite is classified into two groups, i.e., upper and lower bainite. Usually, a high density of intra-lath carbides is present within the bainitic ferrite sheaf in lower bainite, while a low density is found for upper bainite. The current work aims to build up a model to predict the transition temperature as a function of the carbon and Mn concentration in the steel. First, the extended Gibbs Energy Balance model is employed to quantify the thickening kinetics of bainitic sheaf. Second, carbon supersaturation in the bainitic ferrite is estimated based on an assumed quadratic profile across its width. Third, intra-lath carbide formation is calculated based on the theory of nucleation on dislocation. Setting a quantitative criterion for the crititical precipitation rate, the transition temperature can be calculated as a function of the steel composition. The model captures the reported dependences rather well.
