Bauxite tailings, a kind of waste product in the alumina industry, were modified with CMC by mechanical activation and then used as binders(named as MDT) for pelletizing. Experimental results show that the quality of pellets prepared from MDT is similar to the pellets prepared from bentonite. Under the general conditions, the drop strength, compression strength of green balls was separately 3.3 times•(0.5m)-1 and 13.12 N•P-1, while the FeO content and compression strength of preheated pellets and roasted pellets both meet the requirements of industry, which indicates that it is feasible to replace bentonite by MDT.
