Abstract Scope Materials able to withstand extreme irradiation environments are essential for developing future fusion reactors. Neutron bombardment damage ranges from single atom point defects to large defect clusters. Detailed understanding of the 3D damage structure is essential for predicting the complex property changes irradiation causes. Bragg Coherent X-ray diffraction (BCXD) uniquely allows probing of the nano-scale 3D lattice strain tensor associated with irradiation-induced defects. Diffraction contrast TEM tomography enables 3D imaging of defect positions with nanoscale resolution. I will present recent results using both approaches to explore ion-irradiation damage in gold and tungsten. Even very low damage doses are found to cause extensive strain lattice strains. The exact geometry of the irradiation and the presence of defect sinks (e.g. sample surface) both appear to play a pivotal role in controlling the nature of the damage formed. These insights provide vital clues for the optimisation of materials for future power plants.
