Presentation Title DD-2: Interfacial Reactions at the Joints of Bi2Te3-based Thermoelectric Devices

Abstract Scope The interfacial reactions at the joints of Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric devices are examined at 150oC. The solder is Sn-3.0at%Ag-0.5at%Cu, and electroless-plated Ni (P) is the barrier layer. The thermoelectric materials are P-type (BixSb1-x)2Te3 and N-type Bi2(TeySe1-y)3. There are thus three kinds of interfaces, Sn-3.0at%Ag- 0.5at%Cu/Ni(P), Ni(P)/(BixSb1-x)2Te3 and Ni(P)/Bi2(TeySe1-y)3. After reaction for 329 hours, one reaction phase is observed at the Sn-Ag-Cu/Ni(P) interface. Its composition is Sn-5.65at%Cu-39.30at%Ni, and it is the (Cu,Ni)3Sn4 phase. One reaction phase is observed at the Ni/(BixSb1-x)2Te3 interface. Its composition is Ni-5.0at.%Bi-18.0at.%Sb-31.4at.%Te. It could be a ternary compound or a Ni3Te2 phase with significant Sb solubility. Two reaction phases are observed at the Ni(P)/Bi2(TeySe1-y)3 interface. Their compositions are Ni-4.5at.%P-54.0at.%Bi- 16.1at.%Te-2.1at.%Se and Ni-36.5at.%Bi-40.2at.%Te-1.7at.%Se, and could be a ternary compound or the NiTe2 phase with Bi solubility and a BiTe phase, respectively. Couples reacted for various lengths of time are examined, and the reaction phases evolve with time.
