Abstract Scope |
Oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance coatings are commonly applied over the base material (hardware) in new parts and as a possible alternative repair of the hardware after service. A detailed characterization of different thermal spray coatings on Inconel and stainless-steel substrates of different thickness (up to ~1mm) were carried out, for analyzing the coating porosity, residual stress, electro-chemical behavior (cyclic polarization), mechanical properties including bond strength and microstructure (phase stability), in the as sprayed condition. The coating relaxation behavior and thermal stability were studied, after heat treatment at the relevant temperatures. Detailed characterization of the coating behavior, inter-diffusion characteristics with the substrate, and residual stress, enabled understanding of the effectiveness of the coating application. Oxidation resistance coatings evaluated by electro-chemical analysis, cyclic polarization and galvanic potential evaluation, on the stainless-steel substrates helps in improved understanding of the overall coating application both in new make and repair of turbo-machinery components |
