||Zirconia Ceramic Toughened Nanocrystalline Iron

Phase transformation is used as an effective way to improve the toughness of materials in the deformation process. Transformation of yttria-stabilized Zirconia from tetragonal structure to monoclinic structure has been testified to be effective in enhancing toughness of many ceramics materials. Similar to the ceramic materials, nanocrystalline materials also suffer from poor toughness, which greatly limits the application prospect of nanocrystalline materials. Amount of researchers are seeking for ways to improve the toughness of nanocrystalline materials and zirconia ceramic toughening could meet their demand. According to previous research, the nano-scale yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia was synthesized by a co-precipitation method. Then the high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering was used to prepare the nanocrystalline composites Fe-Zr-ZrO<SUB>2</SUB>. The toughness of nanocrystalline Fe-Zr was improved remarkably as result of the addition of ZrO<SUB>2</SUB>.
