| Abstract Scope |
In situ characterization of gas-solid interaction under near reaction conditions is one of the key requirements for understanding catalyst activity and selectivity. We report in situ characterization of the redox process in individual ceria nanocrystals using an environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM). The ceria (CeO2) nanocrystals were reduced to C-type Ce2O3 with ordered oxygen vacancies at about 736 °C in 0.5 Torr dry H2, which was confirmed by high-resolution images, electron energy-loss spectra, and electron diffraction. The reduced phase can be easily reoxidized at 600°C during the cooling in the same reducing environment. The atomic level details associated with this highly reversible phase transformation in ceria nanocrystals will be presented. |
