Abstract Scope |
The thermal stresses induced by a laser can be used to induce bending in sheet metal; however, the deformation microstructures and thermal history during laser forming are complex and poorly understood. Repeated laser passes result in the buildup of dislocation substructure, recovery, and recrystallization with a highly heterogeneous microstructure built up within the sheet. Current models of laser forming suffer because they do not integrate the evolution of microstructure. This work combines the use of advanced electron microscopy characterization of the deformation microstructures with finite element simulations of the thermal history to understand the geometry changes and mechanical properties in the formed components. |
