In Al-Mg, Portevin-Le Chatelier phenomenon (PLC) or dynamic strain ageing results from the interaction between moving dislocations and Mg solute atoms in a supersaturated Al solution. Al-Mg alloys are used for aerospace applications and this phenomenon could be detrimental for the structural properties of the alloys. This research focuses on the effect of gamma-alumina nanoparticles on the PLC phenomenon in an Al-20% A206-0.5% Mg matrix. An A206-1% γAl2O3 nanocomposite was fabricated by diluting a master nanocomposite bearing the nanoparticles with an A206 alloy. This master nanocomposite is then added to an Al-0.5% Mg melt to then produce 1mm diameter wires by cold-rolling. A solution treatment followed by ice-water quenching helped obtain an Mg-supersaturared Al matrix. Tensile tests showed demonstrated how the phenomenon can be observed and quantified using MATLAB for further numerical analysis. Our results showed how the nanoparticles are affecting the PLC phenomenon through signal analysis.
