Following the enthusiasm of aerospace industry, nuclear industry has realized additive manufacturing technology can provide unique capabilities to rapidly fabricate parts during refueling outage, expand design freedom, accelerate deployment schedule, and reduce supply chain. To address the technical gaps and improve this technology for nuclear use, extensive work has been conducted to characterize, evaluate, understand and optimize the additive stainless steel for making nuclear components. This talk will provide an overview of this effort to cover a broad range of aspects, including process-microstructure relationship, defects, nuclear specific material properties (mechanical properties, toughness, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, irradiation properties), and nuclear component demonstration. The talk will also discuss the key material issues that require attentions to ensure good nuclear properties for additive parts, and further optimizations to improve these properties.
