Abstract Scope The present study has been aimed at investigating cracking phenomena in hot-dip Zn-Al-Mg alloy coatings applied to automotive steel sheets. The electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) technique was employed to examine the microstructures and textures of the different phases in the coatings, and to measure the crystallographic orientations of the cracks generated in the phases after bending deformation of the coated steel sheets. It was clarified that the occurrence of cracking in the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coatings absolutely depends on the orientation of the primary Zn and eutectic Zn alloy phases. This cracking mechanism has been discussed in terms of possible effects of the microstructure development in the phases in relation to their material parameters.
