Symposium Perfluorocarbon Generation and Emissions from Industrial Processes
Presentation Title Challenges in estimating global CF4 and C2F6 emissions

Abstract Scope CF4 and C2F6 are very long lived greenhouse gases (GHG) 50.000 and 10.000 yearsrespectively) with a global warming potential (GWP100) of 7390 and 6630. These two perfluorocarbons (PFCs) are almost entirely anthropogenic (with preindustrial levels estimated to be approximately 39 and 0.3 ppt/y). Three main sources have been identified: a) Aluminium Industry (AI), b) Semiconductor Industry (SCI) and c) Rare Earth Smelting (RES). We will give an overview of how those PFCs are emitted by the three industries and will describe the building of an inventory of emissions for both gases that will account for some of the missing factors that have been identified so far. Using information that show the growth of the industries and the rising discrepancies between top-down and bottom up approaches we will demonstrate the importance of having an updated, comprehensive and thorough bottom-up inventory and we will present the first part of the inventory.
