Abstract Scope Higher energy product alnico, as an alternative to rare earth magnets, will reduce supply instability and decrease costs of permanent magnets for green energy applications. Directional solidification of alnico currently achieves the highest energy product but requires final machining which increases costs and material waste. Additive manufacturing (AM) has great potential to be applied in the permanent magnet industry through net-shapes and geometric complexity. This work describes improved alnico magnets produced by AM of modified alnico 8 compositions. Cylinders were built out of gas atomized powders, heat treated, and characterized for microstructure and magnetic properties. The resulting alnico magnets have been characterized using SEM, EBSD, TEM and hysteresisgraph measurements. The improved properties over both sintered and cast counterparts demonstrate the promise for producing high energy density alnico magnets in net-shapes for use in next generation motors and other applications.
