Abstract Scope Radiation-induced defects, from neutron or ion irradiation, may self-assemble into intricate patterns under appropriate conditions of temperature and fluence. One example of self-assembly that has been observed in neutron irradiated UMo nuclear fuel and ion irradiated metals is the formation of a superlattice of nanometer-sized gas bubbles. Specifically, after high-implantation fluences with noble gas ions, a Gas Bubble Supperlattice (GBS) is formed in metals. The mechanisms that drive this self-organization are complex and known to depend on the generation, annihilation and transport of radiation-induced defects and gas atoms. As GBS form under a narrow range of irradiation conditions, they offer unique opportunities to observe and isolate specific defect processes, such as the movement of substitutional versus interstitial gas atoms and impact of cascades relative to thermally induced vacancies. Here, we combine recent synchrotron characterization results coupled with modeling efforts to shed light on the underlying mechanisms that drive this self-organization.
