||Preparation and Microstructure of Al-Sc-Zr Alloys Using Electrolysis Method in Cryolite Based Molten Salt

Al-Sc-Zr alloy has attracted increasing attention recently due to its higher strength and lower production cost compared with Al-Sc alloy. In this work, Al-Sc-Zr alloys were prepared by electrolyzing Na3AlF6-based molten salts containing various contents of Sc2O3 and ZrO2 addition with different electrolysis time. The operating cell voltage varied with changing Sc2O3 and ZrO2 contents with increasing electrolysis time. ICP examination shows that Al-Sc-Zr alloys were successfully prepared by electrolysis with Sc contents ranging from 0.1861~0.5260wt.% and Zr contents ranging from 0.1157~0.4962wt.%. XRD, SEM and EDS were employed to investigate the microstructure of the alloys obtained. It is found that the grain size of the alloys decreases with increased Sc/Zr ratio, and Al3(Sc,Zr) phase is confirmed to be the primary precipitated particles.
