||PP-7: Compressive Behavior and Modeling of Ti Foams Processed by Freeze-casting

Ti foam and Ti-5W alloy foam was produced by the freeze-casting process for comparison. The microstructure of the both foams was observed after etching. Ti-5W alloy foam showed an acicular Widmanstätten α/β structure with most of the W segregated in the β phase as known in the previous literature. EPMA analysis revealed that approximately 2 wt.% W was dissolved in the Ti-5W alloy foam with some partially dissolved W particles visibly observed. In particular, the compressive yield strength of Ti-5W alloy foam (323 MPa) is approximately 20% higher than that of the Ti foam (256 MPa) owing to the solid-solution strengthening effect of W in the Ti matrix. Also, the mechanical properties were analyzed by the modeling.
