Presentation Title Interfacial Reactions at the Joints in the CoSb3-based Thermoelectric Devices

Abstract Scope CoSb3 compound is of good thermoelectric properties. Ag-Cu eutectic alloy is a commonly used joining material. The interfacial reactions in the Ag-Cu/Co/CoSb3 joint are examined and the results are compared to those in the Ag-Cu/Ni/CoSb3 joint. There is no intermetallic compound and a Co-rich layer is observed in the Ag-Cu/Co couples heat-treated at 450oC. The results are similar to those in the Ag-Cu/Ni couples. In the Co/CoSb3 couple reacted at 450oC, one phase is observed. Its composition is Co-49.9at.%Sb, and is the CoSb phase. The CoSb phase is brittle and it can easily be broken during polishing. The reaction layer grows thicker with longer reaction time. The thickness of the CoSb layer is about 40 um after a 45-day heat treatment. The results are different from those in the Ni/CoSb3 couples, in which the reaction path is Ni/Ni5Sb2/(Co,Ni)Sb/CoSb3. The difference is likely a result of different primary diffusion species.
