Abstract Scope Hydrogen has attracted attention of scientists and engineers as clean and environmentally friendly fuel for highly efficient power generation. It has been demonstrated that aluminum and its alloys can react with water and produce hydrogen. It usually requires water to be acidic or alkaline. We have produced nanostructured powders of aluminum alloys that when reacted with water produced hydrogen very rapidly at room temperature without requiring any catalysts. It was possible to achieve 80% of the theoretical hydrogen yield per gram of aluminum in 1 minute and 100% under 3 minutes after the reaction started. This remarkable fast reaction rate was achieved due to the realization of galvanic microstructures in nanoscale. Detailed results on hydrogen generation as a function of reaction temperature, alloy composition, etc. will be presented. Utilization of the powder to build nanostructured bulk part and produce hydrogen for on demand power generation will be discussed.
