||Deformation Induced Structural Relaxation in La-based BMGs

It’s well established that “elastic” deformation is locally heterogeneous and non-affine in BMGs because of the local topological rearrangements (LTRs). The LTRs are related to nucleation of the emerging shear transformation zone which is correlated with the plasticity of BMGs. We have used anisotropic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to quantify the density of the LTRs during mechanical deformation in BMGs. We find there is a local strain relaxation at the short range in most of BMGs except in La-based. In La-based glasses the local strain appears to exceed the average strain. This apparent softening may be related to the enhanced relaxation modes in La-based glasses that were detected in the previous DMA studies.
