Presentation Title Melt Expulsion during Ultrasonic Vibration-assisted Continuous Wave Laser Surface Melting

Abstract Scope Ultrasonic vibrations are commonly used in conventional materials processing such as solidification and machining for improving process efficiency, material quality, and microstructural refinement. The ultrasonic vibrations can also be applied during rapid solidification processing such as laser melting to form desired surface features. In this study, ultrasonic vibration-assisted laser melting of AISI 316 stainless steel was performed. The simultaneous application of longitudinal ultrasonic vibrations (frequency of 20 kHz) during continuous wave (CW) CO2 laser surface melting facilitates melt expulsion and results in formation of holes. The effect of laser irradiation time and working distance on the geometrical and quality feature of holes created during the ultrasonic vibration-assisted CW CO2 laser surface drilling of AISI 316 stainless steel will be discussed. Also, a multi-step finite element analysis for simulation of the heat transfer and the prediction of laser drilled hole volume will be presented.
