Presentation Title Polymer to Ceramic Transformation of Polysilazane Wrapped Nanotubes and their Applications in Energy-Based Devices

Abstract Scope We demonstrate our efforts to functionalize carbon nanotubes surfaces (CNTs) with polysilazane and/or doped-silazane (Al and B) to prepare core/shell structures that upon pyrolysis form ceramic/nanotube composites. Advanced characterization tools confirm polymer wrapping of CNTs and subsequent transformation to amorphous SiCN ceramic. Such shell/core composites act as durable thermal absorbers when used as coating material for laser power meters offering resistance to damage even at a heat flux of 15 kWcm-2. This value is an order of magnitude improvement over 'neat' multi-walled and single-walled CNT coatings previously tested at 10.6 μm (2.5 kW CO2 laser) exposure. In addition, the ceramic/nanotube composite are promising electrode materials for high power lithium-ion batteries. The Si(Al)CN/CNT electrodes showed high reversible lithium capacity (a remarkable 400 mAhg−1 at current density of 10000 mAg-1) with negligible capacity loss for more than 1000 cycles.
