Presentation Title YP-4: A Study on Mechanical Properties of Particulate Reinforced 6063 Aluminium Alloy

Abstract Scope Cast composite samples containing reinforcing particles of calcium carbide and calcium carbide-silicon were produced from sand mould using diesel powered crucible furnace. The reinforcement were milled and classified into various grades of particles sizes and used to reinforce the AA6063 aluminium alloy. Cast samples were solution treated(SHT) at 520oC for 2hrs while some were artificially aged (AH) at 210oC for 4hrs. Results obtained revealed that the tensile strength and hardness of the composites varied with reinforcement particles sizes, reaching a maximum UTS of 201 MPa and hardness of 98.8 BHN in the AH condition and were consistent as the heat treatment condition of the composites moved from none heat treated (NH) to SHT and to AH condition. Microstructural analysis show that precipitates in the SHT and AH composites had more Inter-granular distribution while precipitates in the NH composites appeared to exhibit more Intra-granular distribution.
