||QQ-1: Real-time Radiographic Observation of Equiaxed Dendrite Growth in Al-Ge Alloys

Advances over the last few years in numerical computer simulations of dendritic solidification processes require precise experimental data for reliable comparison. With our recently developed near-isothermal furnace for X-ray radiography, the evolution of equiaxed dendritic microstructures in thin horizontally aligned samples can be in-situ analyzed under defined cooling conditions. We report on Al-(35-50)wt% Ge alloys where the fcc-Al dendrites exhibit mostly growth along the <110> direction. As Al-Ge alloys provide a large X-ray contrast even at small concentration differences in the liquid, concentration changes in front of the dendrite tips and in the inter-dendritic regions have been readily observed with our laboratory X-ray setup. We will present the new measuring device and discuss the experimental data in the context of theoretical dendrite growth models.
