Abstract Scope It has been reported that recently developed CaO containing magnesium alloys could exhibit better performances in terms of processing as well as performance. It has been quite well demonstrated that magnesium alloys containing over 0.3% CaO would show fire proof characteristics during casting. Also, CaO containing cast showed much improved tensile properties. However, formability of magnesium sheet containing CaO has not been investigated in detail. In the present study, formability of AZ31 sheets with CaO addition was investigated at the temperature range of between 100C and 450C. Various formability test methods were used to illustrate the effect of CaO addition into AZ31 alloy. Also, x-ray tomography was used to locate defect characteristics during blow forming at the temperature over 400°C.
