Presentation Title Effects of Microstructure and Strain Rate on the Dynamic Deformation and Fracture Mechanisms in Dual Phase Steels

Abstract Scope The microstructure driven dynamic behavior and fracture mechanisms of Dual Phase (DP) sheet steels under varying strain rates is described in this work. DP steels are used as structural components in the automotive industry for their combination of high strength and moderate ductility. Formability and Crash-resistance expose the steel to high strain rates. Two kinds of DP steels are being investigated, containing ~40% ferrite and ~60% martensite; one with a galvannealed layer and the other without. Stereological techniques used holistically characterize and quantify the features in the microstructures. The mechanical properties of the steels are measured at strain rates in the range of 10<sup>-4</sup>/s to 10<sup>5</sup>/s. Quantitative fractography including profilometry and image based fractography are employed to understand the fracture mechanisms. In this presentation, the role of microstructural features on the dynamic behavior and fracture response of DP steels spanning strain rates across nine orders of magnitude will be discussed.
