||Mechanically-induced Structural Rejuvenation by HPT Deformation in Zr-Cu-Al Bulk Metallic Glass

Localized deformation in the form of a macroscopic shear band hinder application of BMGs for structural applications. The present talk will focus on the control of mechanical properties of Zr-Cu-Al BMG by high-pressure torsion (HPT) deformation. Our study revealed that the HPT deformation of Zr50Cu40Al10 metallic glass resulted in anomalous decrease in nano-hardness and elastic modulus accompanied marked increase in relaxation enthalpy below glass transition temperature. This can be explained by structural rejuvenation caused by an imposed large shear strain during HPT.
The extent of rejuvenation strongly depends on chemical compositions of metallic glass. Property of amorphous phase induced through solid-state amorphization (SSA) by HPT of crystalline Zr-Cu-Al alloy was also studied. SSA sample exhibited mechanical and thermal properties very similar to those in rejuvenated BMG, suggesting that the solid-state amorphization and structural rejuvenation occurs concurrently.
