| Abstract Scope |
Reaction bonded Si3N4 (RBSN) ceramics have many advantages for green technology such as low cost fabrication and small shrinkage during nitridation and post sintering. In this study, hot-pressed RBSN (Reaction-Bonded Silicon Nitride) ceramics were prepared by starting from cheap Si powder with sintering additives such as Lu2O3-SiO2 and La2O3-MgO. A dense Si3N4 ceramics with good mechanical properties were produced by hot pressing of RBSN with different sintering additives followed by nitridation. As a result, the mechanical properties of the resultant sintered RBSNs were more than 1 GPa in 4 point flexure strengths and fracture toughness values greater than 8 MPa.m.m1/2. Reinforced microstructures containing fine grains matrix with elongated grains could be developed for each of RE2O3 plus MgO and SiO2 compositions and resulted in substantial improvements in mechanical properties. |
