Abstract Scope This work aims to investigate the efficiency in the treatment of mercerization in sisal fibers. This surface treatment is performed to obtain a better adhesion of this lignocellulosic fiber with the most common polymer matrices used in composites. This improvement in adhesion provides a fiber / matrix interface with good mechanical characteristics. Usually the interactions between the lignocellulosic fibers and the matrix are weak due to the hydrophilic characteristics of the fibers with the hydrophobic characteristics of the polymer matrix. This work compares ballistic tests on composites reinforced with 20% sisal fibers by volume without treatment with composites containing 20% ​​sisal fibers with mercerization treatment. The ballistic tests are performed with ammunition, caliber, 7.62 mm and with the aid of a doopler radar to measure the residual velocity and consequently calculate the energy absorbed by the composite and its speed limit.
