||F-18: Experimentally Determined Properties of U-Pu-Zr Alloys: What Do We Know and How Well?

Metal fuels based on alloys of uranium, plutonium, and zirconium are being investigated for transmutation of minor actinides to reduce long-term hazards from nuclear waste. Much of the currently used experimental data was measured before ~1970 and is only available in obscure publications and government reports.
Differences between values for the same composition and property are commonly far larger than the errors reported for individual measurements. Understanding the sources of these differences is important for recognizing the “best” values and distinguishing materials-dependent variations from those that result from experimental differences.
This presentation reports results of recent efforts to synthesize and evaluate experimentally determined data on properties of U-Pu-Zr alloys at Idaho National Laboratory.
