Abstract Scope Coal an organic mineral is considered as fuel source globally. Its potential utility as a precursor for value added carbon source is not given sufficient attention. Coal biodegradation is a naturally complex process, which appears to be driven by extracellular enzymes in the presence of various chelators released by different fungi. The present research work is focused on laboratory scale screening methodologies to investigate both the microorganisms and mechanism involved. The investigations helped to elucidate a novel mechanism and biocatalyst involved in coal bioconversion process. Carbon structure in coal has short domain characteristics and is an ideal precursor for nano carbon dots and diamonds. Graphene quantum dots, nano diamonds, graphene sheets and carbon dots present in coal can be extracted by simple oxidative treatment. These structures can be tuned to photo luminescent material for various sensing applications like metal ion sensors.
