||APXe Cell Technology: 7 Years of Low Energy Operation

The new Arvida AP60 smelter in Canada has established a new reference for the primary metal aluminium industry in terms of productivity, robustness and Capex/Opex benefit. The APXe low energy cell has been developed in parallel, using the same basic design of busbars, shell, superstructure and operating equipment.
The first APXe low energy cell was started at Saint Jean de Maurienne end 2010. After seven years of operational experience, Rio Tinto has got a full mastery of design and operation of low energy cell: the cell specific energy consumption is regularly below 12000 kWh/t.
The APXe technology is now available for implementation in existing or new aluminum smelters.
