Symposium Fifty Years of Metallography and Materials Characterization

Abstract Scope The IMS has served industry for fifty years: longer if you consider the twenty years that the AEC Metallographic Group existed befor it evolved into the IMS. My involvement began with a 1963 Group meeting where a paper on vibatory polishing was presented. A similar paper was published over thirty years later in an issue of Microstructural Science which also included one of my IMS presentations. A recent issue of Metallography, Microstructure and Analysis contains a paper describing recrystallization, sensitization and hardness in 304L stainless steel which has been the subject of multiple manuscripts in Misrostructural Science and other technical publications. The metallographic community proclaims and publishes technical information which all too frequentlyfails to influence industrial practices. this talk will demonstrate that progress is madeby integration of metallographic knowledge into manufacturing and service activities and that repeated academic proclamations seldom support industrial progress."
