||C-3: Effects of ZnO Nanoparticles and its Decomposition on the Mechanical Behavior of A356 Gravity Casting Alloy

In this study, the effects of ZnO nanoparticle additions (0.3, 0.7, 1.0 vol. %) and dissolved oxygen atom from ZnO nanoparticles on the microstructures and mechanical properties of A356 gravity casting alloy were studied. It was found that ZnO nanoparticles modified the eutectic Si from a coarse plate-like shape to a fine fibrous shape with better uniform distribution. Furthermore, strengthening effect of precipitates which were composed of transition metal with oxygen atoms coming from ZnO nanoparticles was investigated. Microstructures of the as-cast and T6 heat treated A356 alloys were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmitted electron microscopy (TEM). For the optimized parameters, the yield strength and the elongation to fracture increased by 36.0% and 37.5%, respectively, than that of unreinforced A356 alloy.
