Presentation Title Effect of Cathode Collector Copper Inserts on the Hall-Héroult Cell MHD Stability

Abstract Scope A composite cathode design with copper inserts could reduce the voltage drop and the horizontal currents in the liquid aluminium, responsible for the MHD instability and the intense metal circulation. This conclusion is valid for the component of electric current in liquid along the collector bar. The current distribution over all the outgoing collectors is equally important to the horizontal current in the metal pad in the long direction of the cell. The linear stability theory assumes a uniform current distribution over the cathode, neglecting the full network effect. The model incorporating full 3d busbar configuration coupled to the electric current in the liquid is used to study the MHD response when the copper inserts are included in the cathode construction. The two types of cells analyzed show the possibility for two different scenarios: either decreasing or increasing the MHD stability depending on the overall cell design and operating conditions.
