Presentation Title The Effects of Hot Isostatic Pressing on the Microstructure and Tensile Properties of Additively Manufactured 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel

Abstract Scope Duplex stainless steels (DSS) have an improved weight to strength ratio compared to traditional austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, due to a balanced austenite and ferrite microstructure. The high heat input associated with additive manufacturing (AM) challenges DSS to form equal amounts of austenite and ferrite, free from deleterious intermetallic phases. A laser based directed energy deposition (DED) AM process was used to build 2205 DSS structures. X-ray diffraction showed the bulk as-deposited microstructure contained nearly a 50/50 austenite/ferrite phase balance, free from intermetallic phases. However, increases in build height of the as-deposited material showed increases in austenite and changes in austenite morphology. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is investigated as a technique to improve microstructure and tensile properties, while minimizing defects in the as-deposited 2205 DSS material.
