||On the Existence of a Two-phase Field in Binary α-Cu(Al) Solid Solutions

This research reports experimental observations confirming the existence of a two-phase field within the unanimously accepted α-Cu(Al) solid solution domain, suggesting that the current Cu-Al phase diagram may contain errors in representing phase equilibria at the Cu-rich end. This conclusion is evidenced by both an interdiffusion study conducted with diffusion couples of Cu plates coated with 2μm thick Al films, and Cu-6 wt% Al binary alloys heat treated under various conditions. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses yield irrevocable evidence supporting the existence of ordered face-centered cubic-based nanoprecipitates coherently embedded in the α-Cu(Al) matrix. It is further demonstrated that this phase coexists with the equilibrium phase β above 600°C on the Cu side of the diffusion couple. These results, along with discussions as to their implications to the phase equilibria in Al-Cu binary system will be presented.
