| Abstract Scope |
Welding is a common joining method employed in pipe manufacturing. Depending upon the material composition and thickness the mode of heat input is varied. The parent metal therefore undergoes heating and cooling cycles of varied rates. These thermal cycles, influence the material structure and the properties of the weld particularly in the heat affected zone (HAZ).Physical simulation of the welding thermal cycles can be used to generate conditions observed at different locations of the weld section and the adjoining parent metal. Physical simulators like Gleeble 3500 have successfully been used to simulate the welding thermal cycles and generate physical samples for impact toughness and micro structural analyses. This paper presents an overview of the technique used for the physical simulation of welding process and the effect of thermal cycles on the impact toughness of high strength line pipe steels. |
