Abstract Scope Aluminum based metal matrix composites reinforced with ceramic particles have been extensively studied for many years. High content of SiC and AlN particles provides low thermal expansion coefficient as well as high thermal conductivity. In this work, we would like to present some preliminary results of our attempts to prepare SiC-AlN-Al composites. Green bodies were formed using feedstocks made of SiC, Al powders and wax-based organic binder. Powder molding process was used for near-net shape fabrication. In order to prepare SiC-AlN preform from SiC-Al molded compact, green bodies were sintered in N<SUB>2</SUB> atmosphere to induce the formation of AlN via self-ignited combustion reaction. Porous preform, with relative density of about 70%, was infiltrated with molten Al-Si-Mg alloy in N<SUB>2</SUB> atmosphere. Phase composition and microstructure of the resulting composites were examined by x-ray diffraction, optical microscope and SEM. Thermal properties such as thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity were also evaluated.
