Abstract Scope SiC/SiC composites were introduced as an accident tolerant nuclear fuel cladding to improve safety margins regarding temperature and corrosion, while increasing core performance and energy efficiency. This research aims to bridge the gap between theoretical CMC crack propagation models and bulk finite element models through experimental property extraction and mechanism identification. Micro-pillar compression was implemented to evaluate the interfacial debond shear strength (), internal friction coefficient (), and fracture energy release rate () of the thin PyC layer at the SiCfiber/SiCmatrix interface. Micro-pillars (3m) were fabricated via focused ion beam milling to possess a single PyC interface. It was found that for CVI composites with HNLS fiber and 50m thick PyC; = 265 MPa, = 0.25, and = 2.5 J/m2. Composite irradiation was observed to increase while decreasing and . Additionally, increased PyC thickness was observed to decrease both and without influencing .
