Abstract Scope A long durability of high-performance materials that can operate in corrosive environments under high temperatures is of great interest for equipment productivity and material resource efficiency. A full understanding of the materials microstructure will enable further improvements towards material properties at elevated temperatures. This research within the EU H2020 HIPERMAT project aims at microstructural and thermal characterization of newly developed refractory stainless steel alloys utilized for high-temperature furnace applications. Advanced characterization before and after testing under operating conditions have been conducted using e.g. SEM-EBSD, TEM, Dilatometer and DSC in order to interpret the structural changes after treatment and to evaluate the performance and durability under given conditions. First findings show very promising results under given conditions. It is expected that the newly developed steels will majorly contribute to increased productivity and material resource efficiency.
