During additive manufacturing processes such as Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) or Selective Laser Melting, a melt pool establishes at the bottom of which the previously deposited layer is only partially remelted within the freezing range of the material. The mushy zone created in this way then evolves for a short time with no cooling and under a large temperature gradient. We discuss, through a comparison between phase-field simulations and LMD experiments, the possibility for the Temperature Gradient Zone Melting process to induce a mesoscopic segregation pattern on the scale of the mushy zone, thus providing to the inter-layer band in additive manufacturing a different chemical composition than in the bulk layers.
