||Effect of Particle Integration on the Performance Characteristics of Zn-MgO-ZrO2 Nano-functional Coating on Mild Steel by Electrodeposition Route

Zn-MgO and Zn-MgO-ZrO2, nanocomposite coatings were obtained on mild steel substrate by electrodeposition technique from a sulphate bath. ZrO2, and MgO nanoparticles were added to the bath in varying concentrations. The properties of the composite coating were investigated by SEM equipped with EDS. The electrochemical behavior of the coating alloy was evaluated in 3.65 % NaCl with linear polarization technique and mechanically examined by durascan microhardness tester. The effect of particles concentration on the deposit composition, corrosion degradation and microhardness was studied. The results show that the addition of nanoparticles to the plating rich bath does affect significantly Zn propagation leading to homogeneous and compact deposits with low grain size. Furthermore, hardness, and anti-corrosion properties of ternary phase were improved significantly as against binary system. This was attributed to dispersive strengthening effect and grain induced effort of the particulate.
