Abstract Scope |
Powdermet Inc has been actively researching MMC structure-property relationships for over 30+ years, through collaboration s with Dr Harrigan and many others who contributed to the current leel of understanding and performance in MMC's. Innovations ranging from the worlds first nanocomposite WC products (porous WC-coated alumina balls for the Bic(TM)ever-writing pen)in the 1970's to current generation hierarchical nanocomposites and multifunctional MMC's resulting from designer MMC microstructures will be reviewed. Both cast (interface and dispersion control), melt infiltrated, and PM composite design theories and property results will be presented in a historical perspective outlining the authors view of MMC structure-properties relationship, new processing capability, and commercial particle technology evolution over the last 30 years. |
