||Effects of Alloying Elements on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Mg-Gd-Zn-Ca Alloys

Mg-RE-TM alloys with LPSO (Long-Period Stacking Ordered) phase are very attractive because it has been reported that extruded these alloys exhibited ultra-high strength. According to our previous study, the Ca added Mg-Gd-Zn alloys exhibited high ignition temperatures. In addition, the addition of Ca in Mg-Gd-Zn alloy formed stacking faults in as-cast state and after heat treatment, LPSO phase coexisted with stacking faults in Mg-Gd-Zn-Ca alloys. However, in our previous study, the strength of extruded alloys were lower than those of reported other alloys.
In this study, effects of alloying elements on the properties of Mg-Gd-Zn-Ca alloys to improve the strength of these alloys. Test specimens were prepared by indirect extruder with billets with 40 mm of diameter. Also, we discussed the effect of extrusion condition on mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Zn-Ca-X alloy.
