During oxidation, industrially relevant Ni-based alloys produce an externally grown chromium oxide along with sub-surface oxidation of aluminium either as continuous features at inter-granular locations or as intra-granular particles. Titanium forms an oxide on the outer surface of these alloys but has also been identified as a dopant within the chromia. Titanium nitride particles have also been identified, these form ahead of the internal oxidation zone.
It is the aim of this work to summarise the role of titanium in the degradation due to oxidation of Ni-based super-alloys.
