||PP-22: Long-period Martensitic Phases in Co-Al System

Alloys of the Co-Al system show the magnetic shape memory effect (MSM). This effect is determined by the volume percent of the martensitic phase. Martensitic transformation in the Co-9 at. %Al is studied by the high-temperature X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), TEM, SEM, and magnetic measurements. Two different HCP - martensitic phases, namely 2H and 4H in the alloy after furnace cooling are found. 4H modulated martensitic phase is present in the diffraction patterns up to 773 K. Curie temperature of the 4H modulated martensitic phase is close to Curie temperature of the 2H martensitic phase (527 K). SEM analysis shows the uniform chemical composition of the alloy. Twins of the 2H martensitic phase (epsilon - Co) and areas of modulated 4H martensitic phase are observed in TEM pictures. It is shown that such a type of the martensitic transformation is the specific features of the binary cobalt systems.
