| Abstract Scope |
Surface mechanical alloying treatment (SMAT) was applied to commercial C-103 Nb alloy at both ambient and cryogenic (77K) temperatures. After SMAT, the as-received and SMAT samples were packing silicidated at different temperatures (900oC to 1200oC) for various durations (2-4 hours). The results showed that the different thickness ratios of NbSi2/Nb5Si3 layers are associated with the different surface pretreatments. For the SMAT samples, the thickness of NbSi2 decreased while the thickness of Nb5Si3 increased. X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) were used to characterize the products after the SMAT processing. The formation mechanism of NbSi2 and Nb5Si3 was also discussed. |
