Abstract Scope Functionalization of biomaterials and human tissues with multiple bioactivities is desired to obtain surfaces with improved clinical performance. We have developed bio-inspired coatings and interfaces made of recombinant polymers and oligopeptides for bone and dental pulp regeneration, protection of dentinal tissues, and antimicrobial properties. Recombinamers containing statherin-derived motifs for biomimetic mineralization, amphipathic and antimicrobial peptides derived from the parotid salivary protein, and laminin-derived peptides for inducing permucosal healing are examples of synthetic biomolecules we have used to biologically activate biomaterials. GL13K is an amphipathic and antimicrobial peptide based on the sequence of the salivary protein BPIFA2. The control of the secondary structure of the peptides and their ability to form organized and assembled layers to provide highly hydrophobic interfaces on synthetic and natural materials are key parameters that we have explored to increase their potential clinical use to prevent and treat highly-prevalent oral infectious diseases.
